Cross-Platform Interchange Between Crossrail And Central Line At Stratford

Crossrail and the Central Line have a cross-platform interchange at Stratford.

I turned up today, with trains in both platforms.

There needs to be more interchanges like this between different lines, around the UK.

I can’t think of many.

  • Acton Town – District and Piccadilly Lines
  • Barons Court – District and Piccadilly Lines
  • Euston – Northern and Victoria
  • Finchley Road – Metropolitan and Jubilee Lines
  • Finsbury Park – Victoria and Piccadilly Lines
  • Hammersmith – District and Piccadilly Lines
  • Highbury & Islington – Northern City and Victoria Lines.
  • Mile End – Central and Hammersmith & City Lines
  • Oxford Circus – Victoria and Bakerloo Lines
  • Ravenscourt Park – District and Piccadilly Lines
  • Stockwell – Victoria and Northern Lines
  • Turnham Green – District and Piccadilly Lines
  • Wembley Park – Metropolitan and Jubilee Lines.

I don’t know of one outside the London area.

  2. Barking Station has C2C and District and Hammersmith and City Lines and while Overground uses terminal platform 1 non termininating District Line trains open doors on both sides given cross platform interchange to Overground. For some reason terminating trains on Hammersmith and City trains only open their doors on platform 2 side with C2C which denies access to station only lift only platform 1 .

Lord Adonis recently said that had Crossrail been better planned it could have had benefits the Victoria Line had with its cross platform interchanges at Finsbury Park, Euston Northern (City Branch) Line , Oxford Circus Bakerloo Line and Stockwell Northern Line. One way would have been to have built Crossrail with tunnels and platforms either side of the Central Line creating similar cross platform interchange and major upgrades to Central Line Stations who would have gained modern wide platform and shared lifts and escalators with Crossrail.

Worth remembering sections of joint running like Bakerloo and Watford Overground where apart from Queens Park which has cross platform interchange share platforms as do Piccadilly and Metropolitan lines Rayners Lane to Uxbridge.

Hopefully Crossrail 2 will be planned more like the Victoria Line was and not like Crossrail 1 with its miles of tunnels to interchange lines !

    • Having read the IanVisits post in great detail about the Bank Station Upgrade, I think we’re being getting a lot more innovative. For example, the new Southbound Northern Line tunnel and the one for the travelator have been dug traditionally and use sprayed concrete linings.

It’s like going back to all those PoW stories from WW2, except this time it’s a German company doing the digging.
