Khan Pledges To Name London Overground Lines If Re-Elected

The title of this post is the same as that of this article on News Shopper.

If this is Khan’s big policy for people who use the Overground, then it is very small thinking.

It is also another pointless waste of money.

The Overground needs expansion not a rebranding exercise.

It is successful and every user has their own names for the various lines.

I shall be voting for someone who has an expansive vision for London.

  1. It would be interesting to learn in due course which of the candidates you believe has that ‘expansive vision for London’. Haven’t Khan’s plans to expand the Overground been blocked by the Government?

    • From my many friends in the North and Scotland and comments to this blog; both on-line and off-line, I detect a very anti-London attitude with regard to infrastructructure. I suspect that funding more rail services in London also goes against the leveling up agenda of the Government.

London is going to have to find other ways of funding rail infrastructure.

  2. The original Overground already had individual name like North London Line, West London Line , East London Line and Euston to Watford DC so let’s bring these names back .

I also wonder if Overground should only cover the above lines while the longer lines that often extend beyond London should take up the TFL Rail name with West Anglia and maybe Great Northern if services from Moorgate transfer to TFL ,

There is a problem in that the network line diagrams on trains have taken on the appearance of a plate of spaghetti ( rather apt for orange!) with further expansion making things even worse.

As for “ vision” well we had a long wait between pre war London Transport and post war Ken Livingstone so give it another 30 years and another transport visionary might arrive!

It’s a pity that Christian Wolmar or even Lord Adonis didn’t become Mayor but politics won out over suitability!

    • I think the other two sets of now-Overground lines were not so nicely named, i.e. the lines up to Cheshunt/Enfield and the short shuttle out of Romford. A comment on IanVisits indicates that the former is internally known as “London Inners” but that’s not a good name for customer facing uses. The other really shouldn’t be an Overground anyway, I think, but aligned to an existing rail franchise, or TFL Rail, and given some locally relevant name.

      • Names are a difficult subject, as anybody who has named a child will know.

I think that the Romford and Upminster route should be an Automated Shuttle Train, which does run to a normal timetable, but just goes back and forwards as fast as possible automatically, with the driver in a supervisory role.

There are severals routes in the UK, where this would work. I discussed it in detail for Greenford here.

An Automated Shuttle Train On The Greenford Branch Line

So it would be the Romford and Upminster Shuttle

  3. @anonw..that name for the line (which matches my specification) earns you the film quote video meme “nice, nice. Not exiting, but nice”.
