Young Break For The Border To Ring In The New Year

The title of this post, is the same as that on this article on The Times.

This a subtitle to the report, above a picture of five Scots girls enjoying themselves in Newcastle.

Revellers from Scotland and Wales dodging Covid restrictions at home flocked to clubs and bars in England

It will be interesting to see how the Scottish and Welsh Covid statistics pan out in the next few days.

As a trained Control Engineer, I am totally against lockdowns, except as a very last resort.

It’s like trying to ride a bike only turning the handlebars full left and full right.

Try it and you will soon fall off.

  1. Define ‘last resort’ in terms of infection control…..

  3. How does being a Control Engineer make one an expert in epidemiology?

    • Because over fifty years, I’ve been asked to build mathematical models of everything. I even modelled a theoretical pandemic for a consultant working for a drug company.

It’s a pity that I have lost that correspondence.

  4. I’m sure almost anybody would be against lockdowns, and in fact we’ve never had a total lockdown. To do so would be impracticable if not impossible, and that is why we have experienced different levels of ‘restrictions’. To use your analogy of steering the bike is therefore inadequate.
The real issue is that of determining the optimal level of restrictions for any population that may be considered susceptible, such as the younger element of the population you highlight, the impact on that cohort in terms of them becoming infected and finally the recovery time which will depend on the robustness of the target group, impinging as it does on the resources of NHS staff and availability of drugs.
The fact that Scotland and Wales have chosen to restrict public association more than England is a political one and will only be comparable in retrospect. The outcome certainly would have been more obvious but for the freedom of movement.
I’ll bet few of them would have ridden a bike to the nightlife of their choice though.
