Putin’s Only Aircraft Carrier Out Of Action

The title of this post is the same as that of an article in today’s copy of The Times.

This is the first two paragraphs.

Russia could lose its only aircraft carrier after an accident left a five-metre hole in the flight deck.

Admiral Kuznetsov was in the Arctic for repairs when the floating dock underneath it sank, causing a 70-tonne crane to crash on to the carrier killing one person and injuring two.

Enough said!

  1. Oh come on, the USS Yorktown was very seriously damaged in the Battle of Coral Sea, patched up in Pearl Harbour in just two days and sailed out to take part in the Battle of Midway, where it was badly damaged again [by bombs] and a final salvage operation interrupted by a Japanese sub’ torpedoing it after which it finally sank.

I am pretty sure the Ruskies could patch a hole in the deck of their carrier caused by a falling crane fairly quickly…

  2. For some stupid reason, US carriers of that vintage had wooden decks and bombs and suicide bombers went stright through. Ours have always had steel decks and so we cleared the decks of aircraft when suicide bombers were about and they just exploded and bounced.

The Admiral Kuznetsov has always had problems. When first built the Harrierskis used to burn holes in the deck.

It should also be remembered it is a very old ship.
